HASSAN GAHEMI
1933 -2016
Eric and Sheila first met Hassan Gahemi at Marcos Grigorian’s Tehran gallery, Esthétique:
“Rahim Asa WAS actually there during our visit, and he was in the company of another artist - Hassan Ghaemi - whom Grigorian introduced and described as “wild”. Ghaemi’s art was not on display at the gallery - his work was either too “wild” for Esthétique, or it did not fit Grigorian’s conception of modern Iranian art (which was more likely). But Marcos was gracious and let us know we could see more of it at Ghaemi’s studio, which, he added with a laugh “is also his bedroom!” I remember that during this exchange Hassan Ghaemi was standing there grinning ear-to-ear. He had a gold tooth right in the front of his mouth, a very distinctive look to say the least. We didn’t know it at the time, but we were to forge a lifelong friendship with Hassan.”

Extraordinarily, Ghaemi’s works have remained largely unknown to the public. Most notably, due to his mysterious 37-year disappearance from the art scene, only to re-emerge shortly before his death. Posthumously, the mystery of his disappearance from the public eye has only added to the enumerable theories and questions as to why an artist of his calibre would choose to step away from his professional community.
